What Is Title I Status and What Does It Mean for Your Child?

Guide Hero

The "Title I" label on a school profile is often misread as a warning sign. Here is what it actually means, what it provides, and how to use it correctly when evaluating Nevada schools.

What Is Title I Status and What Does It Mean for Your Child?

A lot of parents see "Title I" on a school profile and assume it means something negative. It doesn't. Here is what it actually means.

Title I Is a Federal Funding Program, Not a Performance Rating

Title I is a provision of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that sends additional funding to schools serving high proportions of students from low-income families — typically when at least 40% of students are economically disadvantaged.

Title I says nothing about academic quality. It describes who the students are, not how well they are being taught.

What Title I Funding Provides

Title I schools receive supplemental federal dollars for: smaller class sizes, extended learning time (after-school, summer school, tutoring), specialist support (reading coaches, math coaches), technology and materials, and parent engagement programs.

Done well, it levels the playing field. Done poorly, it gets absorbed into general operating costs.

The Misconception: Title I Does Not Mean Low Quality

Many of Nevada's highest-performing schools are Title I schools. A 5-star NSPF rating and a Title I designation can coexist — and do, often.

Filter for 5-star schools on NevadaSchools.org and Title I schools appear throughout the top results. Filter them out and you may eliminate some of the best options in your area.

How to Use It

Use Title I as context, not a verdict. It confirms the school serves a high-need community and that additional funding is available. Always look at the NSPF star rating, proficiency scores, and chronic absenteeism alongside the badge.

The Bottom Line

The only reliable measure of academic quality is the NSPF star rating and index score. That already accounts for how well the school serves the students it has.
