How to Enroll Your Child in a Nevada School

A plain-English guide for parents new to Nevada — what documents you need, where to go, and when to apply.

1

Identify Your Zoned School

Every Nevada address is assigned to a zoned public school. Use your district's zone search tool to find yours. Your child is guaranteed a seat at this school.

2

Gather Required Documents

Most Nevada school districts require: (1) Proof of residence (lease, utility bill, or mortgage statement within 30 days), (2) Child's birth certificate or passport, (3) Immunization records, (4) Previous school transcripts or report cards (if transferring from another school). Some districts also require a photo ID for the enrolling parent.

3

Visit the School in Person

For your zoned public school, walk into the school office during business hours (usually 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM). Bring all documents. The registrar will create a student record and assign a class. Enrollment is usually same-day if space is available.

4

Apply to Charter or Magnet Schools (Optional)

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools with their own application process. Many popular charter schools in Las Vegas and Reno use a lottery system with an application window (often January–March for the fall semester). Magnet programs within district schools may require an application, audition, or entrance assessment. Apply to multiple schools to increase your chances.

5

Check Kindergarten Age Cutoff

In Nevada, children must be 5 years old by September 30 to enroll in kindergarten. For first grade, children must be 6 by September 30. If your child misses the cutoff, ask about early entrance testing — some districts allow it on a case-by-case basis.
